Animals are born with two fears, controlled in the limbic system of the brain. These are the fear of falling (not heights) and the fear of loud noises. You may well have gently thrown an infant up and down, watching it laugh: that laughter is a fear response. Our survival is dependent on these fears.
Our conditioning is reasonable for the way in which we learn caution, which is normal and necessary in our everyday lives. Uncontrolled caution becomes a fear or phobia. No baby is born with a fear of spiders, of flying in an aeroplane or of public speaking. Any unwanted fear you have is something you have learned.
As a child, most of us learn to be afraid of the dark and then as we mature we learn to be comfortable sleeping soundly with the lights off.
There are hundreds of different phobias that people suffer from, the more well-known ones such as fear of flying, spiders, needles and confined spaces, to the more obscure such as fear of toadstools, cotton wool and mashed potato.
Hypnotherapy uses a very effective process called the rewind, and can help you conquer specific phobias in 3 or 4 sessions. If you have a non-specific phobia, such as agoraphobia, or your general level of anxiety is high, then more sessions may be required.
Take a positive step to change now. Imagine the difference it will make to your life, the confidence and the freedom you’ll feel, when you’re free of your fear for good and you can make your own choices without any restrictions.
