What is it and how can hypnotherapy help?

This is a symptom where somebody intentionally damages or injures their body. It can start for a number of reasons, the fundamental reason being that an individual is no longer able to cope and feels out of control.

It may start with the feelings of lack of self respect, be a way of getting attention or a cry for help. The intention is more often to punish themselves, express their distress, or relieve unbearable tension. Sometimes it's a mixture of all three.

This behaviour then becomes a pattern, caused by the relief felt with each episode. This relief is due to the brain secreting higher levels of happy chemicals each time, the same as eating a chocolate.

Afterwards, the person may then feel even lower and have repeated feelings of disgust at their actions.

I have found that hypnotherapy has been very powerful in helping clients regain their self worth, reduce anxieties and change their patterns of behaviour for new and better ones that serve them more positively in their life.
